My dear friend, Layla (Lila) Van Hall passed away on Wednesday, July 1. She was 56 years old.
I observed during her illness and passing, her friend of twenty years, Lee Collins, an RN, giving and administering to her every need. Lee left her hearth, home and family in California as soon as Lila informed her of the dire diagnoses after an MRI. She was on a plane and arrived just in time.
Upon arrival here, Lee went to work like a precision drill sergeant without the attitude. She organized, contacted and went through so many hoops to get Lila: into Hospice, delivery of a hospital bed, zero gravity chair and medication that somewhat alleviated Lila’s excruciating pain. Lee went shopping providing groceries of all of Lila’s favorites. She cooked, cleaned and gave the one thing that all of us (under these circumstances) would pray to receive: unconditional love.
Because of her extreme pain, if Lila would bark, so to speak, Lee did not take it personally and would continue to shelter her under the umbrella of: “I am here for you” and she was indeed. If I know Lila, she felt safe and knew that Lee would protect and help her.
Lee is, without question, an Angel on Earth. And, Lee, if you read this, when you lay your head on the pillow every night KNOW without doubt or reservation what a truly awesome human being you are! And, I am sure, you will continue to share your gifts with others.
We have been blessed with knowing you and having you grace our lives with your lovely presence; if only for a short and sad period of time. We can only dream that each of us will leave Planet Earth with someone like you to love us through the transition. Thank you Angel Lee!
